The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten. The construction started in 1891 and the church was completed in 1895.

The original construction had an impressive size and monumental style. The church was bombed to pieces in 1943. Today only remains of the church is left. After the war a new church was built close to the ruins of Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche. The new church and the remains of the old one are now together forming a memorial of the devastations of World War 2.
