Alte Nationalgalerie is located on the museum island - Museumsinsel - in Berlin. The museum has been through a substantial renovation, and was reopened in 2001 as the first one of the museums on the museum island.

Alte Nationalgalerie is together with Bode Museum, Neues Museum and Pergamon Museum a group of museums on the museum island that in 1999 achieved the status of having an outstanding universal value when they became a part of UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The Alte Nationalgalerie offers visitors 19th century paintings and sculptures. The museum has an extensive collection of art from the period between the French revolution and World War 1. The Alte Nationalgalerie was built in 1867-1876, and is thereby from the same time period as the art exhibits.
